TAG AFM Images

This page contains a gallery of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images obtained from the hairs of Thornhill Art Group (TAG) members. Four images per person are shown: 2 from regions close (within 1 cm) to the scalp/root end, and 2 from regions close (1 cm) to the tip end. Hair lengths and distinguishing statements are not included for reasons of keeping samples anonymous. TAG members will be/have been told their sample number in private. The images will be/have been discussed during the visit of TAG members to Portsmouth. Hair scientific terms, such as striations and endocuticle, are described on the Atomic Force Microscopy page. It is important to emphasise that a few images are not representative of all hairs from that individual. The purpose of showing the images here is to: (i) appreciate the structural similarities and differences between hairs; (ii) provide a method for TAG members to examine images of their own hair fibres; and (iii) provide inspiration for artisitc responses.
